History of the Department The Department came into existence in 1978 as Department of Economics and Management Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Administration. The first set of students graduated and convoked in 1981. There were only eleven (11) students then. However in 1984, the Department of Economics and Management Studies was bifurcated and Management Studies became an autonomous department. In addition, the Department has maintained three Postgraduate programmes: Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies (PGDM). Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and PhD in Management Studies. The PGDM programme was introduced during the 1993 /1994 academic session. Since then, over ten (10) sets of students have graduated from the programme. The MBA programme was first introduced in the 1990/1991 academic session in the then Department of Management Studies. Later in 1993, the part-time programme (known as the Executive MBA (EMBA)) was introduced to provide wider opportunities for candidates to pursue higher degrees while still working. The PhD programme has registered over fifty (50) candidates to date. The Department also facilitates sub-degree programmes of sister units and departments. In 2001, Management Studies Department was carved out of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Administration to form the nucleus of the new Faculty of Management Sciences. As a result, the Department of Management Studies metamorphosed into Department of Business Administration in the new Faculty. All staff and structure of the old Management Studies Department were retained by the new Department of Business Administration.
